Google starts charging for missed calls on October 1
If you advertise on Google Local Services Ads — the ads with the green "Google Guaranteed" checkmark that sit above the regular search results — the way you get billed is about to change.
Google's notice is short: "On October 01, 2026, we are updating how and when you are charged for call leads originating from Local Services Ads."
Here is the part that matters.
Missed calls become billable leads
The change, in Google's own words: "Missed calls during business hours will now be charged as valid leads if a user stays on the line for more than 20 seconds."
Read that twice, because it inverts something most contractors assume. Until now, a call you didn't answer was a lost opportunity. From October 1, during the hours you told Google you're open, it's a lost opportunity and a charge.
The caller has to stay on the line more than 20 seconds. A hang-up at eight seconds still costs you nothing. But 20 seconds is roughly four rings and the start of a voicemail greeting — it is not a long time to hold.
Three details worth knowing
If you use a phone menu, the clock starts later. Google says that if your setup asks callers to press a key to reach a department, the 20-second timer doesn't start until they press it. A caller who never picks an option isn't charged to you.
Follow-up calls count too, but only once. If the first call doesn't qualify as a billable lead, later calls between you and that customer can be charged if they meet the valid-lead rules. Google's ads liaison has clarified that you're charged once for follow-ups inside a 15-day window; after 15 days, a new call can become a new billable lead.
This is happening alongside a bigger move. Local Services Ads are being folded into Performance Max campaigns, which began rolling out for U.S. home-services categories in August 2026. Pay-per-lead billing, your Search and Maps placement, and the Google Guaranteed badge all survive the move. The old LSA dashboard is what goes away.
Who this actually affects
Only businesses running Local Services Ads. If you've never bought a lead from Google, nothing here changes for you.
But if you are running them, this hits your cost per job directly. Lead prices in home services generally run somewhere from the mid-$40s for cleaning work up to $130 or so for plumbing, depending on trade and market. Every one of those you pay for and don't answer is pure loss — you funded the click, the caller reached you, and nobody picked up.
Three missed calls a week at $60 a lead is roughly $720 a month for nothing. That's not a projection about your business; it's arithmetic you can run against your own Google Ads invoice.
What you can actually do about it
There are three honest options.
Tighten your business hours in Google. The charge applies to missed calls during the hours you published. If you listed 7am–7pm but nobody is near a phone after 4pm, you are paying for a window you can't cover. Narrowing your hours to the ones you genuinely answer is free and takes five minutes.
Answer more of them yourself. If your missed calls are clustered — lunch, or while you're up a ladder, or Saturday mornings — sometimes the fix is a rearranged day rather than new software.
Put something on the phone that always picks up. This is the one we build, so treat what follows as what it is.
Where we come in
Our AI answers on the first or second ring, 24 hours a day, in English and Spanish. It takes the details, books the job on your calendar, and texts you what happened. A caller who would have waited 20 seconds and hung up gets a conversation instead — and the lead you already paid for turns into a job on the schedule.
Plans start at $149/mo with 400 AI minutes included, no setup fee, and a 14-day free trial. If your Local Services Ads spend is meaningful, the math is worth doing on your own numbers before October 1 — take your average lead cost, multiply by the calls you miss in a month, and compare.
If you'd rather just hear it work, call our AI setup line at (361) 348-8804 and ask it anything a customer would. Or reach a person at (866) 507-8399.
